Running on Empty — When Tiredness Becomes Something More

There's a tiredness that sleep doesn't fix.
You know the one. You wake up and you are already exhausted. You get through the day, but only just. You've probably been telling yourself it will pass — but it hasn't.
If that's you, this post is for you.
Have you already done all the obvious things?
Blood tests. GP visits. Maybe a specialist. You've been told everything looks normal.
And yet — you don't feel normal.
Here's something important to understand: normal blood tests don't mean nothing is wrong. They mean nothing was found within the parameters that were tested. That's a very different thing.
Standard testing is valuable. But it has limits. It captures a snapshot of what's circulating in your bloodstream on a given day. It doesn't tell us how your body is functioning at a cellular level — or how it's been coping over the past months or years.
That's where I look differently.
What could actually be going on?
A few things I look at that often get missed:
Mineral patterns and cellular function
Minerals underpin almost every process in your body — energy production, stress response, hormone metabolism, sleep. When mineral balance shifts — quietly, over time — the effects are subtle at first. Then they're not.
One of the tools I find most useful in persistent, unexplained exhaustion is hair tissue mineral analysis (HTMA). It gives a longer-term picture of how the body has been responding to stress and producing energy — things a standard blood test simply doesn't show.
I've written more about how I use HTMA here: Finding a Starting Point: How Mineral Patterns Can Bring Clarity in Midlife.
Blood sugar instability
This one rarely gets discussed unless diabetes is already on the table — but it underlies an enormous amount of unexplained fatigue, brain fog and energy crashes.
When blood glucose fluctuates throughout the day, your body works harder than it should just to stay stable. Over time, that's exhausting. Addressing this foundation changes everything else.
The stress and mineral connection
Chronic stress doesn't just affect your mood. It depletes the minerals your body needs to recover. It dysregulates the very systems responsible for energy production. And it does this quietly — over months and years — long before it shows up anywhere on a standard test.
What does support actually look like?
When I work with someone who is genuinely depleted, I'm looking at the whole picture — not just the obvious markers.
I look at mineral ratios that influence energy production. I assess blood sugar patterns. I consider how long the stress response has been running on overdrive and what that has cost the body nutritionally.
Where needed, I prescribe targeted herbal formulas that go well beyond what's available off a shop shelf — specifically chosen to support adrenal resilience and recovery from deep, accumulated exhaustion.
This is a different level of support than most people have accessed before. And for women who have been everywhere and found nothing — it often makes a real difference.
You don't have to keep pushing through
If you've been told you're fine when you know you're not — that gap is worth investigating properly.
I offer in-person consultations in Rolleston and online consultations throughout New Zealand.
